It's actually quite the same today as it was yesterday-- then English created it against the hippie movement (beatles era I'd imagine) because they felt they should be upright working class citizens, message is still the same but in America the blame game is used "blacks, hispanics, non-whites are lazy and brings drugs..blahlbah"

It wasnt the Beatles era, it was more around the end of the 70's, into the early 80's, during Thatcher's reign of destruction that the skinheads started to get a rep for the wrong kind of stuff. Check out a film called This Is England. It'll tell ya a fair bit on the subject, and its a very good film too.
