if you show up in an ER, they have to treat you, no matter what. a lot of poor folks do this, they are called "frequent fliers", going to the ER for just about anything, taking up hospital time and they are also often referred to as "no payer", so the hospital has to eat their charges and pass it on to everyone else who pays a bill.
