If you think about it, it would only be worth digging in the yard if not too many people were out there with you. If everyone decided to dig rather than crime there would be very little money available in the yard. However, if you're waiting at level 14 there is no good reason for you NOT to dig seeing as it helps you stay away from being attacked/mugged in SD as well as giving you a way to collect cash without fear of leveling up.
