it doesnt make much difference apart from if you are needing a certain amenity, like a xmas tree or sofa

It doesnt really matter. Think about your amenity sizes. An even number size would be good for 2xX's while an odd would be good for 3xX's. Also, it is based on favors per tile. It is currently 15 favors per tile. If you expand fully in one direction for a week or two, expanding just one row/column in the other direction will take much longer because you have to buy more tiles for the expansion.
